The housing slump is so bad in Ft. Myers, Fla., that many blocks are littered with vacant and abandoned homes. That's putting a huge burden on city officials, who can barely keep up with the blight left behind. (Oct. 21)
It really saddens me to see what has happened to Florida. I love the place and I have vactioned there every summer for the last 10 years. I was planning to buy a condo a few years ago but now due to the mess that has been created by all the foreclosed and abandoned properties I don't want to touch the place. There are even several ocean front condos which are bank owned which was unheard of 10 years ago. Things are getting worse and I don't see an end in sight. It is a shame.
That code enforecment officer at the end confirms my opinion that the loin's share of Americans are stupid people! How in blazes can they do a decent job twice as fast with half as much resources??? And he explained that the houses WILL remain vacant until the market starts to work again. Even if it means $1.6M homes in 2005 selling when the market finally corrects for $50,000.00!
It's starting to look like Detroit Michigan back in the mid-70's...let us hope that Florida can learn from Michigan's lesson in Political Pocket Lining vs the good of the State and it's once beautiful cities.
