Ayn Rand's Anthem, a novelette
("Ayn" rhymes with "fine", the reader mispronounces it as "Ann")
This novelette depicts a world of the future, a society so collectivized that even the word "I" has vanished from the language. Anthem's theme is: the meaning and glory of man's ego.
Ayn Rand was a Russian-born American novelist, philosopher, playwright, and screenwriter. She is widely known for her best-selling novels The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, and for developing a philosophical system she called Objectivism.
She is known as a defender of objective reality, absolute reason, a morality she called rational selfishness/rational egoism, laissez-faire capitalism (please note, she WAS NOT A "LIBERTARIAN"), and romantic art.
"My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute." --Ayn Rand
"I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for the sake of mine." --Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
The title track on the 1976 concept album 2112, by progressive rock band Rush, has a story that very strongly parallels Anthem (although, perhaps naturally, the protagonist of 2112 discovers a guitar instead of a light bulb). The liner notes of the album acknowledge "the genius of Ayn Rand."
Neil Peart, Drummer/Songwriter for Rush, said that 2112 was based on Anthem and inspired by it; though he did say that he didn't notice that they were so alike until afterwards, and so thought that it was necessary to provide a reference. Through his success as a Songwriter and drummer in pop culture, Neil Peart has become one of the biggest popularizers of Rand's ideas, although that was not the purpose of 2112 or his song "Anthem" on their earlier album Fly by Night. An Ego is not a guaranteed downfall. Many men of great Egos die wealthy with what they desire and many men of great charity and no ego die horrible "unfair" deaths. Hubris is a subjective sin and not an intrinsic quality that mandates failure. You can be savagely selfish and greedy and never be punished for it.
people who inherited more than you did are still human. they have lives in which they'll be happy or sad just like you. and just like you they'll eventually die. good luck doesn't make you immoral, and doesn't erase your need for morality.
This is my favorite book ever. Had my English teacher not assigned it in ninth grade, I might not have ever gone on to read Atlas Shrugged, the Fountainhead, We the Living... It also led to me meeting the guy I am with.
Objectivism is simple. It's learning how to live a prosperous, successful and enjoyable life, while learning to cooperate and help others to the extent that makes sense.
Rational self interest is indeed healthier than irrational self interest or rational self empathy.
Individualism is an important component of Ayn Rand's Philosophies. In objective fronts, there are leaders who strive to be the best group of smart individuals they can be. Group leadership is the key to proficient objectivism.
Let's not forget it teachs us to be more level-headed. That reality is a wee-bit more important than a fantasy. I use to support communism for a long time. Then I took a step in Rand's corner and it changed me. I'm not exactly what was the turning point. However, I think it was during Atlas Shrugged.
I doubt I'm in a position to really debate with you, but I would like to say this. In spite of all the and downright wrongs the US has done, she also has done more good for the world than any other country in history. And that's not just the contributions to fighting & ending world wars. What about wonderful inventions like planes, cars, phone, lightbulb, pc, blues, jazz, gospel, rock&roll, etc. etc. etc. ? credit where due.
I don't know why we're suddenly discussing the US. It could be that I've forgotten my original comment. I fail to see how this is a nationalist issue.
