My friend Nirav and I designed and built this, the Pants Assistant, a machine for paraplegics to put on your pants for you. This was our 9th grade science fair project which won Grand Award at the Science and Engineering Fair of Houston. This is just the first prototype and we are working on improving it.

  • This is pretty interesting. I have a spinal cord injury myself. The only "issue" I can think of is if it can pull jeans under a person even when all their weight is against it. I'm not sure if you were not putting a lot of weight on your legs or not in this video. But if it can do this that's really good! Great job!

  • @WildkatPublishing I wouldn't worry too much, this thing is pretty strong, runs on four high powered electric motors, possibly upgrading to six in our latest model. Plus, we've been having trouble with our first motor manufacturer (bad gears) and will likely get different motors that will have more power and go faster (if you want) when we find some that work well. As soon as Nirav and I are done with college applications this project will be back on to full steam.

  • This is still just a prototype. We are currently developing a few improvements and working out some minor problems (it broke a bit). So far not available for sale, but we're working on getting a patent as soon as we have a final design.

  • It can go in reverse if you rewire it, or you can just turn it around.

  • This can work in your bed, as long as it isn't too loose of a surface or too slick. You can use it on any surface you like, really. Possibly even sitting in your wheelchair (you'll need strong arms though, but most paraplegics do). Plus you could make it skinnier or wider and add traction to the machine to allow for different circumstances.
