@rcschumann It was common then. A well publicised research report a few years ago did indeed prove that arsenic was responsible for Phar Lap's death, but it came from eating poisoned weed in an adjoining field where he was being rested at the time. Tommy would not have made that mistake. He loved the horse like a son, and cared for him with meticulous devotion. There is a DVD memoire and book featuring Tommy where he breaksdown retelling the the painful story of the great horse's death.

@mysty0 According to Tommy Woodcock's diary, Phar Lap's trainer gave the horse tonics that contained arsenic, strychnine, belladonna, cocaine and caffeine. He was given an overdose of some of these drugs before the Agua, which is probably what later killed him. The fact that Secretariat was subjected to strenuous workouts before races (which probably would have ruined any other horse) proves he wasn't given drugs - he wouldn't need such workouts before races if he was on the juice. cont...

@mysty0 Do you know that's true? Where is your evidence? I have been reading the brilliant book made into a movie, and there is an addendum containing a memoire by the surgeon who did an autopsy on him. He remarked on the extraordinary size of his heart - a third bigger than Phar Lap. He also observed that there was no evidence of pathological enlargement. I suppose if it were a mutation, we might have expected some of Sec's progency the inherit that acquired characteristic. None did.

@Bassow2008 PharLap was a champion long before anabolic steroids allowed the likes of Secretariat to grace the hall of fame!

Australia's greatest horse? I resent the implication.., he was the WORLDS greatest horse!! You fail to mention he was killed by americans who cant handle fair competition!
