    the confederates didn't fight for slavery. they fought for their right to secede from the union. When Abraham Lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation, effectively making the war about slavery, hundreds of union soldiers threw down their arms and abandoned their posts because that wasn't why they were fighting.

    They forgot to mention that the first legal slave in America had been running from Anthony Johnson, the first legal slave owner in America, who was also a black African. The resulting court case set the precedent for legal slavery in the colonies.

    Don’t believe me? Look it up! You can find it in “Legal History of the Color Line: The Rise and Triumph of the One-Drop Rule” in Chapter 7 page 117. This book can be found on Google books and read for free.
