Philip Morris {Marlboro} sponsored the first three seasons of "DOBIE GILLIS" on alternate Tuesdays- Pillsbury was the "alternate sponsor"; note the Philip Morris/Marlboro/Parliament display in front of the cash register in Gillis' grocery store, and the row of Pillsbury flour and cake mixes on a rear shelf? Sponsor influence, right down to the sponsor's product in the lower left corner of the screen during the closing credits in most network prints (but not here)...

That's beacause the Federal Communications Commission and Federal Trade Commission called for a ban of Cigarette ads which began in 1971 and has been in place ever since and that is why you do not see the show's sponsor product in the lefthand corner however, now that the show is on Me-tv I have seen the closing credits with products from the "Colgate- Palmolive" company from the 1962-63 season.

Is this a kinascope or did the 16mm episodes come to tv stations with the commercials?

Shown when CBS truly was THE TIFFANY NETWORK.

As a little kid at this time, I was puzzled that Marlboro cigarettes came in a "pack or box", as the jingle says. So what was the difference, I wondered. They looked like the same thing when they were shown in the very last shot of the commercial.
I understand now that one was just paper and cellophane, and the other was cardboard.

Yup, I'm too young to have seen this show when it was originally on but I watched a lot of it on Nick at Nite in the 80s. I just looked to see what Nick at Nite had on now...looks like about 300 episodes of George Lopez who I've barely heard of and frankly couldn't care less about :(

It seems so strange today to see a TV commerical for cigarettes. The gov't didnt' outlaw them until I think 1971. I can recall seeing a LOT of cigarette commercials when I was growing up in the 60's. I can remember the jinglies to the commericals for brands like Marlboro, Winston & Lark, THANKS for posting this intriguing "blast from the past"! :)

That was from either 1959 or 1960 because that was when that particular logo for 20th Century Fox TV was used.

Probably because 2:51 was supposed to include a "sponsor's tag", 'EArchivist', common on most filmed network shows back then. The idea was, the advertiser who sponsored that evening's episode often reminded viewers at the very end of the show about another of their sponsored series on the same network, in a 10 second "tag" {"Marlboro also brings you "---------", ----day night, over most of these stations"}. Obviously, Marlboro's "tag" wasn't included in this print...or they didn't include one!
Nice to see the complete original closing. I remember watching this on Nick-At-Nite back in the 1980's before they started sucking like now. I wonder why there is not a Marlboro pack in the left hand corner though instead of the two hearts. That is usually where the sponsor's logo was.

Yes, and why the cue to include a sponsor's message at 2:51, when a Marlboro ad was included in the print a few minutes earlier?
Dunno.
