@HalloweenMachine525 That's true- the difference was that The Rite of Spring involved breaking new ground, whereas he was simply writing pieces like Firebird and Petrushka. Richard Strauss likewise worked on Zarathustra for a year because it's such an intricate work.

@gsmonks I know what you mean, but Stravinsky wrote this entire ballet aside from the very ending scene in just a few months. from December to May 1910-11. He revised it in the 40s but like Firebird, it was composed in a few months. in fact the reason Stravinsky got the commission with Diaghilev was because he started working right away and got it done. Then Diaghilev came back to him with the idea for Petrushka. The Rite of Spring was developed for over a year :) and he did work hard!

Composers like Stravinsky worked ten times harder on their craft than your average composer today. He and others, like Richard Strauss, would work a year or more on a single piece.

this piece sounds like a winter holiday, joyous, exuberant, frosty-bright, glorious -- everybody's Christmas should have this mood -

@NickjamesC Its a contrabassoon

@NickjamesC That would be the contrabassoon.

@kirsten889 our marching band this year has a whole show based off of petrushka, because of it's 100 year anniversary. :)

You can definitely hear what parts Zappa quoted in his music.

WTF what orchestration is making the sound at 4:58!?!?!?! that is awesome.

Petrushka is a story of a Russian traditional puppet, Petrushka, who is made of straw but who comes to life and develops emotions.
The play opens on St. Petersburg's Admiralty Square.
When the curtain rises on a tiny theater, as the Charlatan introduces the inert, lifeless puppet figures of Petrushka, a Ballerina, and a Moor.
The Charlatan casts a magic spell with his flute. The puppets come to life and perform a vigorous Russian Dance among the astounded carnival-goers.

I listen to this piece seriously well over 10 times a day. It just never gets old. PsytranceMan777 isn't the only person who is addicted to this!
