I can thank MF DOOM for making me always recognize soul songs before I listen to the originals.

I hear ya. It's the approach. If you're into a particular genre - let's use Jazz Fusion for the sake of argument, since GD is known for producing a lot of it (among other genres he's also worked well with). So one way is to explore that genre, and you fairly quickly discover artists who are well known for it and for being there in the so-called formative years. Same with a lot of other genres, say Funk. With the net nowadays, it's so easy to find one artist and then get 'others that sound like'

I would definitely expect that particular group of people to know about and be exposed to much more music than the average person. I used to despise sampling because I felt like it was a cheap trick, but these days I kinda like it because there's always a chance it'll expose you to some gorgeous classic songs like the guy above mentioned. I could be keen to search for as much stuff as I possibly can, but that doesn't mean I'll find every song that's been sampled or will be sampled by chance.

Probably. I happen to know plenty that are serious musicians or otherwise have been in the industry (engineers, producers, composers, session players, instructors, etc.) that are the same. That is, they have a good grounding in music and are well versed in more than just whatever's 'current' or 'mainstream' or 'popular' or however you want to label it.
Anyways, from where I sit, majority most certainly doesn't rule much. Either you want to check other stuff out, or you want to stumble upon it.
