@walllboy Karr hated being tied to that bass.

This guy is amazing. But I swear he sounds exactly like Corky from "Waiting for Guffman"

Yes, it IS an AMATI! Take it from a bassist, who has played for well over 40 years, has worked with Gary, and has SEEN his Immmortal Beloved up close and personal. Oh - and my mentor also has an Amati on which I've played. An Amati has its own special voice, and most bassists worth their salt can identify it just by hearing it.

What is a fact is it belonged to Koussevitsky, his wife Olga gave it to Kaerr and the bass is as old if not older. And I have heard it live in concert with Karr and it will fill an auditorium. The is ALL I need to know. ...Plus Karr is one double bass genius.

You do realize that wikipedia is one of the least credible sources you could ever use. The information can be cahnged by anyone just as easily as I am typing this comment.

Steven Reilly, good man.
He made my son's bass...:)

The bass has been proven to not be an Amati. Steven Riley of Guaneri House in Grand Rapids, Michigan has done research on it. The bass is bery unique. It is almost three to four basses in one. The bass shows several changes from the it original form. The ribs are two different woods, the perfling is different from the top bout to the bottom bout. The upper bout "shoulders" were at one point reshaped. The bass is also small for a 3/4 size. It is also several different colors, not from use
I attended Gary Karr's master classes at music camp in Flagstaff AZ in 1976, 77, and 78 and I can assure you this bass is the real thing. An AMATI ! It looks VERY much like my viola teacher's NICOLO AMATI viola and I have no doubt in the almost 400 years of it's existence many changes and mods. have been done

This video shows Karr's sense of humor. His personality and outstanding musicianship changed the classical music world, and young bass players could now envision themselves in a soloist's role.
