Well, early Soukous was heavily influenced by Afro-Cuban music.

African Jazz was the name of the band - the most influentian in african popular music. Jazz was used in (congo) lingala slang of the era in lots of different ways - It could mean good and among other things I am told it meant marihuana... anyway you are right neither African JAZZ or the other big band of the era OK JAZZ ever played Jazz.
