I can Agree with you on this one looking at the video that gentelman makes it look hard work by pulling downwards, as I played these in hertford while the tower bells were out of use for full circle ringing. They still used the chimes on the same bells in total they had 10 bells. Hertford bells also had rubber tubes to help your hands.

I played on the ellacombe chimes before they are good fun. Full circle ringing was out until the tower was repaired

They sound heavy!!!

Can you send me the sheet music for this, or a scanned copy of what you're reading, I'd like to play it on the chimes I use.
-
thats correct, you pull them outwards, not downwards as shown here, the chimes i'm restoring at the moment have rubber tubes on the to prevent skin loss or any injury to the hand etc.
-
i've been there too!! Love that place.

I was pulling them straight out like a bow, using the pulleys (unlike this gentleman), but after half an hour or so, there wasn't much skin left on my fingers!

I remember playing those bells until my fingers were bloody. I always swore I'd bring gloves next time I was in Cork.

The same happened to my fingers also.
But don't bother with gloves: finally I found out that the ropes should be pulled as a bow instead of pulling them down. :-)
