This is a time-lapse film I put together in June 2008 of the 24-hour light effects in Trondheim, Norway. All of the footage was made within 15km of the city centre, so it's very much a 'Trondheim' time-lapse.

Trondheim lies at 63° 26′ N, about 350km south of the Arctic Circle (66° 33′ N). The city, therefore, is too far south to experience the true Midnight Sun effect. Instead, we experience wonderful all-night twilights from May 23rd to July 21st. At this time of year, the Sun sets for a few hours, but is only about three degrees below the horizon at its lowest point. The stars are never visible, even on a clear night, and it is easy to read a book (for example) by the twilight, without the need for artificial light.

In this film, a number of local attractions can be seen, such as Kristiansen Castle, Nidaros Cathedral and Tyholt Tower. The sharp-eyed viewer might notice a number of natural phenomena, too. These include noctilucent clouds (01:17), the fall of the tide (00:45), and the formation of cumulus clouds.

I admit that the quality could be a bit better- it's hard to render a file made up of individual photographs. If you know me and would like a better quality version, e-mail me at my Hotmail account.

Music is by the British band Travis. The song -- 'Sing' -- is from their album "The Invisible Band".

  • this is civil twilight not midnight sun

  • Yes, that's right. Take a look at my information box, top right.

  • I just have to make this comment; that's not the midnight sun. It doesn't occur in Trondheim. Midnight sun is when the sun does not go below the horizon :)
