Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. "Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
-"The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus.

  • but the people who are so desperate as to risk their lives getting into the United States might not have the right conditions to be able to learn another language. If they have trouble getting enough money to put food on the table, how will they learn english?

  • I think all US embassies and consulates could have English classes. How people get to the embassy within their own country is a matter for them to solve. After all if you can cross a desert and dodge the US border patrol you could get to and embassy.

  • I think you may have missunderstood... I was saying that if its at the embassy, and any person off the street could just walk on in and ask to learn English, for FREE... than there will be alot more people being taught than there are imigrants... which means teaching some of those people English are of no benefit to the US. However, if we offer discounts or free courses in our borders, it will allow all non-English speaking citizens the capability to learn the language.

  • FYI while seeming to say that English classes would be at government expense like that's a bad thing then in the next post suggest discounted or FREE ESL classes. Who do you suggest pick up the tab if not the government? The immigrants? What if they can't afford it. An issue many of them would undoubtedly face. Also I think learning English in itself is proof enough you really want to be here. It's not just a feeling that everyone should speak English here because I do. It shows commitment.

  • While I agree that a nation divided by a language barrier can only end in trajedy, I dont believe we should prevent them from entering the country just because of an innability to speak our language. However, I believe that while they are attempting to gain citizenship they should be allowed discounted or free access to English as a second language courses, and should be required to show a reasonable effort to learn the language... unless under certain circumstances... such as mental disability.

  • What if they get overcrowded? If so many people really want in the US and are willing to do it legally, and learn the language before they come... there are gonna be alot of people wanting to learn english at the embassies... plus, I imagine it would be free... which would probably mean anyone who wants to learn English would just go into these classes... at our governments expense...

continued in next comment... they dont let you write enough... haha...

  • Thats not true, wait for what? There are no feds going door to door seeking out illegals who should be verifying data from online forms, is there. There is no waiting. People should have a chance, all should go where they want. BUT one strike, you're out!!

  • I know the feeling. I spent 6 years in the Army and 2 of those years were spent in Germany and I learned German because I was in THEIR country.

  • thsnks man

  • I agree with you to a point but isn't the main thing being missed here is that because of illegal immigration all of those who are going by the rules and filling out the paper work to come to the USA legally are having to wait longer because of those coming illegally?
