  • He's talking about what after Marcel Mauss is known in anthropology to be the paradoxical logic of "potlatch," which is the ceremonial distribution of property and giving gifts (as originally practiced among certain Native American peoples of the northwest Pacific coast). The idea is that a competitive giving back might neutralize or even destroy the gestures and the whole system of values of the receptor as an aggressive display of superior wealth from the giver.

  • Does anyone know what he's talking about in the middle of this video when I think he mentions something that sounds to me like "pocklatsch"? I have no idea what he's referring to.
