So what exactly does the bag do to the trumpet? The sound was not very different from a regular trumpet, perhaps a bit more mellow.

For you trumpet players that are listening to this to learn the excerpts - primarily the dance solos - notice that Phil's rubato fits into the rest of the orchestra. It is in line with what Maazel is conducting. Just a thought.
I feel the uncontrollable urge to start a noir narrative.

its called a ghetto mute. Probably the North Korean Government didn't allow them to bring a mute thinking they might bring an illegal item like a cell phone into the country.
In other words it is a bag over the trumpet.
