Stemming from Shorin-ryu, and considered the 'mother' kata of Isshinryu. Naihanchi teaches principles of close combat moving in and out of Naihanchi dachi. Gamaku (waistline) rotation is emphisized as a power source within this short but complex kata.

  • There are different variations of practically all traditional Karate kata. Each style tends to put it's own emphasis on certain principles and those principles reflect in their variations of the kata. Naihanchi is (according to Motobu Choki) originally Chinese. Different branches of Shorinryu have their own variations, Isshinryu has it's own, as does Shotokan.

  • your naihanchi dachi seems to be a bit short....is this the isshin way, im uechi so im just wondering.

  • Isshinryu Naihanchi is about shoulder-width apart. Some other systems such as Shotokan tend to have a wider stance.

  • I'm Shotokan. So, we do it very differently. I can't believe that there is different variations of one kata.

  • I've been having trouble mastering that kata. I was practicing it for two months last year, and I still couldn't get the hip-twisting right.

I'm impressed by this guy's kata demonstration.

  • I will be posting my vid of uechi version soon, once I get my camera working again. Do you still get good strength from your hips that way also??
