Francia Russell talks about the importance of music in Balanchine's 'Concerto Barocco'.
Francia explains the very challenging work of Corps de Ballet in this Balanchine and how wonderfully Balanchine manages to flawlessly combine it with the soloist's part in this 18 minutes ballet. The ballet is divided in three movements. 1: two solos from two ballerinas. 2: a pas des deux. 3: the whole cast

  • What INTELLIGENT, valuable commentary! And how beautifully Russell demonstrates the steps she's teaching to the dancers.

  • I'm a bigger fan of Paul Taylor's Esplanade with this music. This just feels a bit...forced with Bach's score. Taylor's movements feel way more raw and powerful. It's on YouTube too. Check it out.

  • I LOVE her striped knit overalls at 1:36!! where could i find overalls or pants like that?!

  • I had the pleasure of studying with Ms. Russell at PNB and to this day I can honestly report that she is one of the smartest women I've ever met. Although I was only a summer student she immediately memorized my name and all of the other students' as well and she gave me much valuable career and life advice. She even inspired me to study at Columbia University, where she'd also gone. An extraordinary woman.
