"What You See Ain't What You Get" is a silent sound/kinetic sculpture by Michele Spanghero (2011)
displayed at Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, Piazza San Marco Venice, Italy for 95ma Collettiva Giovani Artisti
description: Six stacked speakers form a spiral structure maintained in equilibrium by the magnetic attraction of the speakers themselves, organized as part of a serial sculpture. The speakers reproduce a 8 Hz infrasound sine wave therefore inaudible to human ears, but visually perceptible only through the slow oscillation of the membrane: this undermines the very function of the sound object leaving the primacy to the optical / kinetic perception of sound waves. The wave frequency is 8Hz that occurs frequently in nature and also has a significant value in music as the basic frequency of the natural harmonic scale.
