if that info about compensation is valid (I have more than one reason to NOT trust "wikipedia" on a number of things) it's news to me. The factory KNEW what it was doing, tried to cover it up, from the documentary I saw during many years of anti-mercury activism dental, fish, vaccines and as a group of 650 scientists world wide who coordinated info and help, the victims got $200 arrogantly and begrudgingly given, semi-mandated by a guy reminds me of Mr. Burns on The Simpsons

The struggle for compensation and recognition continues to this day. I used to teach English to a Japanese researcher researching the Minamata disease just a year ago (he's in the U.S. studying at a University there now). The system is set up to make it very difficult for the patients and their families to complain or receive more money.
