Just my opinion but the Amtrak loco is running "full" while train is sitting still makes me believe its there for the HEP, electricity for the passenger cars.
-
@TGChinappi FRA regulation means that a diesel must always be present, if I remember correctly. The diesel is there as a precaution, but helps a good bit with dynamic braking.
-
@TGChinappi Probably to assist it pulling the rest of the train, reduces strain on the old locomotive as well as probably reducing maintenance costs.

muy bien

I like how 4449 is sporting the Flying Scotsman's old double-tender look here.
-
how come this engine always has to hook up 2 a diesel when it pulls a train
-
as the stem operator of 4449 run a diesel behind it, it would be nice to have the diesel locomotive painted in the daylight colors, rather than Amtrak livery.

Steam bath anyone. Great videos skip I love this loco, I guess you could say i am loco for this loco.

Friggen Fantastic video SkipW....really really nice

SkipW.....the 4449 woudn't be so quiet running if they didn't have that darned
GE Genesis hooked up behind her....and shoving a bit to take some of the load off of her....just to save some fuel......which I can understand....but, darn...it sure would be alot more awesome without the GE.
These beautiful engines need to be preserved for future generations to see, and they need to be kept running.
These engines truly are art in motion.
My Dad had his steam Loci engineer's ticket, he got it back when they still used trans to pull logs.
