Harper's harmony in thirds, leading up to the climax, is terrible and makes no sense. There's a reason it's unison in the original - it brings order out of chaos and makes a very powerful statement. Also, notice that Bowie and Mercury had very clean cut-offs (e.g. "people on streets", their consonants are perfectly together), and Harper and Vedder are just arbitrarily cutting off whenever and it's an awful mess. Swing and an embarrassing miss.
