UMTS is a new standard for mobile telecommunication. UMTS networks are currently being deployed across the world. In comparison to the established GSM standard, UMTS enables higher data rates and supports a wider range of data and communication services. This is largely due to the WCDMA radio technology employed. Many signals are transmitted simultaneously on the same 5 MHz frequency band and separated at the receiver using digital coding techniques. Radio network design in this context aims at provifing the desired coverage and capacity in an efficient manner. These two goals are somewhat contradictive because they are coupled through interference among radio cells. Potential interference between antennas must therefore be considered and controlled already in the planning phase.
