FAKE 18inch COILTEK COIL from CHINA

Whist we didn't have an identically shaped coil to compare the fake with, we did have another large coil directly from the manufacturer which was used to determine the fake with. Fake metal detector coils have started to flood out of China and this video shows just how good the replicators have become in reproducing the fittings, plastic and molding. But these fakes are not perfect. A quick call to Coiltek's staff confirmed that this one was a fake. What the video doesn't show is that the scammer sold it to a 71 year old woman for $570. She wanted to get it as a surprise for her son. Her son in turn brought it to me to confirm whether or not it was authentic and at first glance it certainly looked good. Unlike the coils floating around last month, several changes had been incorporated into the new fakes to make them even more alike to the actual authentic product.

Something else that the forgers in China are doing is contacting the detector stores all around the world to attempt to get them to carry the fake stock - something that none are willing to do... so they end up on Ebay or from strangers offering them near the goldfields. Some fakes are actually selling for thousands of dollars - which is insane when your realize they may not even work properly. Their method has been to ship them in bulk to the major countries (and cities) that have Minelab accessory distributors & dealers so that anyone buying them from these destinations might mistakenly assume that they are coming from a legitimate source.

I mentioned to Coiltek staff that i would put this footage up on YouTube and the unhappy coil owner also asked me to spread the word this way so others are not duped. Remember that the Chinese (and Turkish) fakes are incapable of functioning correctly on your Minelab detector. They barely penetrate the ground, let alone highly mineralized soil, and may even fail to provide circuit protection - potentially damaging your detector. The biggest complaints tend to come from prospectors in Australia and the Sudan, all of whom find the fakes to be incapable of normal depth and operation. Some fail to work at all.

Bet the fake coil works fine. Nothing to making a coil so long as you can get it stable and tuned. You need to do some vacuum forming, make your windings and tune and set with resin. So long as you know what machine it needs to work on and use the correct amount of windings I see no problem. Many coils are over priced and it looks good on those that lose market when a new cheaper product comes out. Not saying that I agree with the copy cats. But look at NEL coils. Better and cheaper than Detech.

@escotty77 - People who bought real detectors noticed their machines were dumbed down the moment they used the fake coils. And fake machines are just gutted VLF detectors masquerading as PI machines - so they don't perform even remotely like the real thing. The process of making the real coils has a low tolerance for errors and specific grades and types of wire must be used. UV resistant plastics must also be used. These fakes were made to cash in on the demands of the Sudanese Goldrush.

I bought a fake coil with no resin inside and I am sure with the help of my friend we can get it right and it will be just as good or better than the original. Our plan is to make it lighter. Tuning and filling will be a nice winter project. Nice thing is the coil cover fits perfect to my original. I would not recommend buying a fake coil as finished product. That is why I bought mine without resin.

@nerodesign000 - Yes I am sure many people have made the mistake of buying a fake machine and getting scrap. Even the big names have problems getting the machines right. lol That is why I use a Minelab. My point was with regards to the brand name coils being over priced because you pay for the name. Glad to see some great coils on the market now for a reasonable price. Like I said the Nel's are great and cheap. Remember the name "NEL" they will take business from "Detech".

I didn't waste my time testing what came from China. The real coil would work far better than the fake due to the simple reason that Coiltek do R&D. I wouldn't trust copied products if you want that elusive gold. With the price of Gold on the uprise why would you try to save a few dollars on a fake, if you knew it was a fake! But in the same token if you were unaware, this would cost you the nuggets you dont find and will deter you from the hobby.

I read in an article about a guy who copied facebook (the Chinese version has over 300,000,000 subscribers), in the article they asked they guy if he felt what he did was wrong. In the article they apparently think over there that as long as you improve upon the genuine article and make it cheaper, you are doing no wrong, it is only a service to mankind. Now, granted, I don't know many Chinese knock-offs that are superior or even on equal standing with the original, but those were their thoughts
