This lil' critter stung my partner in our hot tub yesterday. She basically squashed it and it fell into the water. I fished it up and put it into a glass container...just to find it alive the next day. The question is...what in the world is it? It has a stinger that comes from between the antennas and sort of curls around...pointing again it's own chest. In the beginning, a few frames let you ID the stinger, which is pulsating - after climbing up the glass wall, you can really make it out fairly well. Then you have these intense shrimp-like eyes and the dark colored wings...never seen anything like it...do you know what it is? Write me please - also if you'd know..is a bite dangerous?!

  • What you got there is an Areomosus Tigritaneus, or a western fruit beetle. The one you show is a male, the female of this species has temporary, but limited flight and is twice the size of the male. The are fairly common in the southwest U.S. and are believe to have origionaly come from South America, Peru and Chile. Their diet consists mostly of fruit and flower petals. As far as assassin bug it is not related, but does offer a secretion that will iratate the skin and eyes

  • Looks like some kind of assasin bug. Here in eastern Pa, we have some kind of insect not commonly seen- looks almost like a mantis but much smaller and thinnner, more like a walking stick, with mantis-like front arms. I have seen them eat small insects. What is it? So far, noone has yet to identify it?
