the only Kata required, is to attain a belt is for your black belt. according to the Kodokan.
some clubs do ask the judoka to perform certain throws to obtain the next belt.
my club (Kidokan) does not.
progression and the willingness to compete in
shii (tournements), will determine your belt achievement
not required according to the Kodokan.

The complete judo uses katas in "sutemi-waza". It encompasses wrist, arm, knee locks all kinds of chokes, strikes, kicks and throws not just easy take-downs. The dangers in other arts don't allow practitioners to express themselves realistically. "Randori"in a good dojo is done freely, against any skill any height or weight. When i fight i use elbows, knees head, everything, and then i like to "SMASH" my oponent really FAST and HARD. i've left people on the ground and had to help them.

Do your homework. I've tested it myself and i know judo is JUDO, with sutemi-waza and all. And... And... BELT means Shit! It's not an indicator of someone being able to kick ass. Even the "National Police Force in Japan uses "JUDO". End of Story.

Judo has katas (ie opponent doesn't strike back - so not just randori). Actually I think you have to know few for each belt color.
And you just implied other forms are more dangereous. Hm...
Judo is "AWESOME. The effectiveness of "judo" depends on many factors. For example, where is it being taught? who is teaching it? and most of all personality and calibre of its practitioner. JUDO is simply what you make of it. I'ts different for different individuals. The "Gentle Way" is scientifically designed. IT'S AS EFFECTIVE AS YOU WANT IT TO BE.

Don't you think that sounds like giving away belts? I had to work my butt off for mine.
