NASA's Kepler spacecraft is discovering a veritable avalanche of alien worlds. As the numbers mount, it seems to be just a matter of time before Kepler finds what astronomers are really looking for: an Earth-like planet orbiting its star in the "Goldilocks zone".

if we only invested all the money in space research instead of war... where would we be now

Why? It would mean that we can colonize other planets that will provide living conditions and resources, and whoever knows what else... Humanity could, in one point, in the future achieve "Type 3" civilization. And if conditions could be replicated somewhere else, it's not far-fetched the idea, that life could also appear and exist. If so, the vast Universe would be a bit less lonely place :)

Because that's as groundbreaking to the scientific community as pointing to water and saying "You need to drink this or you will die!"

Why not just point down and say, "There it is! A planet that could support life!"

Good point. If we are even going to explore space with manned spacecraft we will have to decide whether or not to stop acting like a bunch of apes fighting over a speck of terrain or ideas. The choice is ours.

Good to know there are people like you, who know what we could achieve if we all would work together.

Why would we ship the resources back home? By the time humans are that advanced the earth will already by at its end.....so it would be easier to just start again on that new planet.
