This is a preview of a film done by Chuck Smith and Ari Marcopoulos in 1999. Forrest Bess was a visionary painter who lived in Texas, sold bait for a living and firmly believed that hermaphrodism was the key to immortality. In the film, actor Willem Dafoe is the voice of bess. For more info contact "producerchuck@gmail.com"
When I was a young boy my Dad did a lot of fishing on East Matagorda Bay and he would buy bait from Mr. Bess. I met him numerous times at his "bait camp" but I was just a kid and knew nothing of him being an artist. He was just a nice man who sold live shrimp and who would have blue crab for sale now and then. He gave my Dad a painting of a strange looking pelican or at least that's what it looked like to me at the time. Looking back I know it wasn't a pelican but something else entirely.

One of the most fascinating and enigmatic artists America has ever produced. I story that is as tragic as it is unforgettable.
