The Drake equation is obsolete.

@NobDickBalls he may be, if you want to find out if he is just ask your mum .... that is if her mouth aint full!

YEA i still think around 8 or 9 of the civilizations in our galaxy destroyed themselves

@udipta21 I listen. I also hate Richard Dawkins, when ever I compare the two.

Damn! I knew I should have paid more attention in physics class!

@ShaneGentryRobb "undeniable proof" You mean through mere estimation right? That's not really a consistent proof.

I think he was a bit too eager and lacked modern knowledge of the vast differences in star systems, likely gas composition, and distance of planets from those stars. It's an undeniable proof that their are advanced civilizations on other planets. But I would guess somewhere in the range of hundreds. Because of the vastness of our known universe and the limits of physics and mass it is extremely unlikely that any of those individual civilizations would meet each other.

Well, funny, but we discovered a 10th planet in our solar system back in 2003. ITs so far out though, most dont consider it a part of the Solar System proper. I believe its out past the Ort Cloud...or is it the Kupier Belt...? I get those 2 mixed up. But yeah, even back when this was made, they had an incling that there might have been a 10th planet. He could also be counting in Europa I think. the moon of Jupiter with a massive frozen ocean.

Just because YOU cant understand it, doesnt mean he is talking crap.

@NobDickBalls why you troll?

The title is very very misleading. A mathematical proof is only true in mathematics (such as n+1 > n), and this isn't even a mathematical proof. It is a theory to which we haven't even got much solid data, as Carl Sagan demonstrates by guessing almost every part of the equation. It is an inspiring idea on what is needed for civilizations to arise (suitable planets, life, enough time, the right path of evolution, etc.) but without hard data, the drake equation is more like a playful thought.
