I think she is being satyrical. No more fighting or working things out, but we get to live on this dusty, dead orb. We know how to fight the very good fight . . . by giving up and escaping to . . . death? Hmmm. To the MOON Alice! to the MOON!
this song is so touching because where i live almost no one goes to church and yeh they do think im odd and they do try to change my opinions of God but my dad just started a church and we are not going to the moon we are bringing everyone here into our church
I think she's being ironic. The idea of taking a church to the moon is not so much adventurous, as it is pathetic in the sense of sad and nonsensical: there are no people on the moon. Defeats the whole purpose of church! So I hope Monday church isn't going to do that.
Does anyone know the meaning behind this song? I don't think she is promoting escapism. Could it be a satirical commentary on the church which often resists change (as reflected by the second verse "There'll be no one there to tell us we're odd, No one to change our opinions of God.")?

One of my favourite SG songs. This video captures the idea perfectly. I'm glad I stumbled across it!
