wow very interesting, I will try and look that up. Me and my brother attempted to climb this about 4 years ago, myself at the time only being 16 and my brother 18. We had to turn back about 200ft from the summit due to a quick change in conditions, I wish i summited!
Its a strange mountain. In the mid 50's to mid 60's passenger planes where crashing into it all the time. Over 600 people died. Some people have said it because Canigou has a high iron content in the rock and this factor sent the doomed aircraft flight instruments crazy and the pilots could not get a reading. But the mountain is big enough, I think you would notice if you where flying towards a wall of rock. Any ideas anyone?
@Punorss: this summer I saw the remains of a crashed airplane (or helicopter) on the path to the refuges des Cortalets...
