ミミズの死骸を食べるオオヒラタシデムシ幼虫 Carrion Beetle Larva

フナムシや三葉虫を連想する不思議な外見の生物です。道端で干からびかけたミミズの死骸を齧っていました。暑い日で腐臭に耐えながら接写。ダンゴムシほど上手くありません­が触ると丸まって防御姿勢を取りました。詳しい人に質問したところヒラタシデムシの仲間の幼虫であることは確実で、オオヒラタシデムシの可能性が高いとのことです。こうし­た死体掃除屋も自然界ではとても大切な存在です。

Larva of the carrion beetle (Eusilpha japonica) feeding on a roadkill victim of earthworm. One-yen coin (20 mm in diameter) was placed as a scale reference. Late-July, 2007 in Japan.

This may be an funny question but does these things bite if you're about "handle" them? I guess they're having some kind of jaws because they're able to bite off the flesh from corpses... I'm not trying to touch these "filthy" critters but I'm just interested. :)

I "handled" an bush cricket once and that bastard gave me actually pretty nice bite... Never thought that they're willing or even able to do that for human but they are... And I must confess that it wasn't a nice feeling... :D

as for bush crickets, they eat other bugs as well as leaves.

it hurts when bitten like by a praying mantis.
