Tatyana visited Qingdao's Chengyang People's Hospital between February and March 2009 to receive transplant injections of non-embryonic umbilical cord blood stem cells. She lived with her parents at the hospital between injections.
In this video, her mother talks about Tatyana's condition, Retinopathy of Prematurity--a common outcome from premature births where the high oxygen levels of incubators damage retinal development--and their decision to come to China for a procedure not yet available in the USA. Tatyana was nearly blind with only extremely limited light perception prior to transplantation.
Non-embryonic stem cell therapy for ROP is available today in China.
