It could be. They have are also bringing in an actor to play a young Julius Caesar. I think they are trying to up the ante villain wise as the series progresses. Really looking forward to the last two episodes.

Ah, seems a bit soon.  Crassus didn't fight Spartacus until the end of the war. Maybe it's a building of that character.
