The scuba cylinder is quite possibly the easiest piece of your equipment to maintain and with proper care and very little effort it should last much longer than the average divers time participating in the sport.

Every scuba cylinder needs to be visually inspected annually by a qualified visual inspection technician who will drain the cylinder, remove the valve and inspect the tank internally for corrosion, foreign materials and cracking. As a diver the things you can do to care and maintain your cylinder are quite simple. First of all, like with any piece of gear, be sure to rinse it off after each use. Next, always store your tank laying down when not in use. The final tip is easily the most important one and can quite possibly make all the difference in the longevity of your cylinder. Never, ever for any reason drain all the air from your cylinder. Keeping as little as a couple hundred psi of air in your tank will prevent condensation from forming inside.

Following these simple tips will help ensure that your scuba cylinder lasts for as long as you are involved in diving!

  • Before I answer that I think I'd like to know why you want to drain it? You should always keep a few hundred pounds of air in the cylinder to prevent condensation build up and corrosion of the inner wall of the tank.
