I put the tip of my thumb to the left side a bit and "roll" it left/right I used to press hard and vibrate lol but the former is waay better.

It's the challenge that's created against OTHER people who have mastered the technique. These can get far more heated than normal matches, and require players to be extremely accurate when it gets to the crunch.
It's quite easy to know how to do it, but just race as one normally would anyway in a race.
Most wins I've gotten myself have been from racing normally, boosting around corners as you would back in Mario Kart 64.
