Composed by Văn Cao (1923-1995) in 1941, "Thiên Thai" remains one of Vietnam's best loved melodies. This transcription for violin with piano part was made in the mid-1980s by Lê Thanh-Tâm (performing here with his sister Lê Thiên-Nga in 2008).

  • Thanks for posting your most attractive transcription. I am intrigued by the bird-song - is it from the garden outside, or is it a recording forming part of the performance?

  • Thanks for your kind reaction! The bird-song sounds like a pre-recorded part but it did, in fact, come from the garden outside: local birds seem to have a strong rhythmic pattern indeed...

  • I'm sure Messiaen would have approved! Incidentally, there is a very famous 1924 recording of the British cellist Beatrice Harrison playing in her garden, accompanied by the trilling of a nightingale.

  • Was she playing "On hearing the first cuckoo in spring"?

  • good sound ! it's touching

  • Excellent!

  • lovely. Harrison made several records in her garden accompanied by a "nightingale" but it has been suggested that it was actually a whistler.

  • The song named "Paradise" and was composed by Văn Cao (15/11/1923-10/7/1995) who is also the author of the anthem of VietNam. The lyric based on a folklore: "Who's voice is sounding over the waves! Felling a story in paradise. Long time ago two young fellows by a very morning were wandering a lonely path on a high mountain leading to the heavens .....When they were leaving the heavens with regrets and loneliness. Farewell to paradise! Fare way the angels of love!". Keyword on Wikipedia: Van Cao
