Thought to be slow and clumsy on land, Gentoo penguins can actually outrun a man over short distances. Certainly penguins are agile and fast when in the water. This is the fastest swimming species of penguin, and they use this skill when hunting krill, fish and squid. During a dive at Barrientos Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica, these birds showed just how curious they can be! More films at www.silvertipworld.com

  • That's correct - the bubbles of air help to insulate the bird from the cold, but are pushed out by water pressure. This creates a stream of bubbles as the penguin swims, increasing the impression of speed.

  • what are these bubbles coming from their backs? My guess is the air under their feathers gets pushed up to that area where they come out, but, it reminds me of some kind of scuba gears
