In this video interview, SEO expert Stoney deGeyter explains his approach to keyword research, not only for a few keywords, but for the hundreds of keyphrases needed to optimize, say, a large e-commerce site. The approach involves three main stages: finding and organizing core keywords, and then arranging a campaign with the qualifiers to those core keywords.

First, find the core terms that are applicable to your site, that is, generic keyphrases with no qualifiers, such as "motorcycle battery." Next, assign core keywords to the particular pages and sections to which they apply.

Finally, for each core term, look for all the searched-for qualifiers, such as "honda motorcycle battery," "dirt bike battery," or a product name or number. Determine which qualifiers can be grouped together. Realize that some qualifiers, such as "cheap" and "vintage" are antithetic, and must not appear on the same page or sectional page.

Stoney deGeyter is the president of Pole Position Marketing, a leading search engine optimization and marketing firm helping businesses grow since 1998. This video interview was taped on December 8, 2009 at Search Engine Strategies Conference in Chicago, IL.
