During a visit to the Bowes Railway in September 1990 I filmed the only preserved SG rope incline in action. Starting at Blackhams Hill Engine House we view wagons being lowered and then being hauled back up the Springwell Incline. Halfway down the incline we see Pelaw Main Junction, where the current tourist trains divert to a platform, and finally we see a tourist train leaving Springwell over the level crossing at the foot of the incline.

  • I used to man the crossing on Blackhams Hill in the 1980's. I was on the crossing gates the day they had the runaway of six wagons down Blackhams Hill, and about two weeks later when they recovered them after repairs. I only live two miles away and was just at the Railway yesterday with my WW2 Dodge truck for their open day. Steve

  • Thanks for that. I understand that the winding engine has been vandalised? I managed to video the other side incline in the 1980s. More recent visits have brought the comment "we can't get the volunteers to run the incline"

The branch line was worth a visit recently when there were three locos in steam.
