The New England Cable News program "NewsNight" broadcast in April 2002. Responding to the revelations of the Boston Globe Spotlight Investigation into sex abuse within the Boston Archdiocese, and the resulting outcry of thousands of other Catholic abuse victims across the United States, Pope John Paul II summoned all U.S. bishops and cardinals to a meeting in Rome. In his opening remarks, the Pontiff told American church leaders that there was no place in the priesthood "for those who would harm the young," saying sex abuse by priests in the United States was both a sin and a crime. "People need to know that there is no place in the priesthood and religious life for those who would harm the young," he said, according to the official English text of the speech released by the Vatican.
"NewsNight" sought reaction from former Ambassador to the Vatican Raymond Flynn and Fr. Ed Vacek, professor of theology at the Westin Jesuit School or Theology. In part 2 of this broadcast, also posted on this YouTube channel, SNAP New England leader Phil Saviano gives his reaction to the Pope's comments.
