Absolutely masterful. Gruberova now rivals Callas for my favorite interpretation of Caro Nome!!
-
@leprincebeaumont That's preposterous - she was in brilliant voice well into the 90s, and although her voice certainly wasn't built for Devereux, she sang it with great passion.

INSUPERABILE

The "scooping" cited below is hardly "painful". Considering how many high F's she hit head-on during those same concerts, it's obvious that the portomento was interpolated for effect, and not because Gruberova has any problem attacking high notes.

woooow! Just beautiful singing

All of these videos you've posted of Gruberova in 1990 - where I think she is at her prime - are incredibly moving. Thank you for sharing them.

You're right. It's musically called legato, but it's also a glissando, which was not written.
-
@Mooorhe That is legato, she is the one with the best legato ever!

Peccato!
almost 15 seconds held trill at the end, espectacular!

I'm a huge fan and while I understand some listener's aversion to her "scooping", I find the example cited below to be extremely minimal and anything but painful.
The trill at the end is ASTONISHING!!
