The sub-Antarctic weather in St. Louis this January may not be so fun for humans, but it's just right for the penguins at the Saint Louis Zoo!
Several of the king and gentoo penguins that reside indoors at Penguin & Puffin Coast took take a walk in the snow on Thursday, January 12, 2012 with their keepers. This is just one of the many enrichment activities offered to Zoo animals on a daily basis.
Weekly Penguin Parades take place at 2 p.m. on Sundays through February 26, 2012 when the temperature is 50 degrees or below.
The king penguin, native to the sub-Antarctic islands, is one of the largest penguin species, second to the emperor. Its large size, about 33 pounds, helps it cope with the extreme Antarctic cold and allows it to dive deeper than most penguins. The gentoo penguin is about twenty-six inches tall and weighs near twenty pounds. It is the third largest species of penguin.
Penguin & Puffin Coast is kept a constant 45 degrees year-round. The indoor habitat includes king, rockhopper and gentoo penguins from the Southern Hemisphere, and horned and tufted puffins from the Northern Hemisphere. Visitors can see these sea birds on land and underwater in this unique walk-through exhibit.
