ANCHOR:
In Finland yesterday a student shot and killed ten people before turning the gun on himself. This is the country's second such attack in less than a year.
STORY:
The gunman has been identified as student 22-year-old Matti Juhani Saari.
Saari posted menacing videos of himself wielding a gun on the Internet in the run-up to the attack.
The school had 150 students and 40 teachers as of 2005.
The school's principal depicts how the drama unfolded.
[Tapio Varmala, School Principal]:
"I was myself at the school when it all started. Within 30 minutes we got quite a few of the students out. The school building is quite new, three floors. My prediction was that there was around 150 students there, but as I said, we got students out quite fast. Right now I am just trying to stay calm and keep the situation calm."
Many of the students at the post-secondary school are around 20 years old.
Finlands interior minister says that police were in contact with the gunman a day before the shooting. They were alerted to footage posted on the Web showing him
firing a handgun at a shooting range, but were unable to get in touch with him immediately.
The Internet connection revived memories of last year's deadly attack at Jokela high school, where a student killed six of his classmates, the school nurse and the principal after broadcasting his intent in a YouTube video.
