I've done it both ways and it worked.. it's just a little harder to maneuver doing it upright

Would it matter if the bottle is upright versus held perpendicular to the ground as you do the hitting against the hard surface? I'm guessing it's the built up pressure inside the bottle that is pushing the cork out.
