Amos clearly isn't up to the fitness level of the others because he's been at home all those weeks and hasn't had someone to push him to ever increasing intensity levels. The ONLY chance he has is to try to work twice as hard as the others, but I don't think that kind of motivation is in him. As he said earlier, "Life's too short."
