Im glad to find another dulcimer player that utilizes the other strings and your thumb. If God gave the instrument (yes the dulcimer is God-sent) 3 strings, why not put them to use. The same rule applies with using your thumb. Some players/teachers say not to use your thumb. But I say DO!
Well the thumb can be useful, but for some situations it's better to leave it out. I use it when its needed, and if it's not, I don't.
