  • @nunapb Are you kidding? The proportion of level 4s is miniscule compared to level 3s, which is again small compared to 2s.

If you look at level 4 prereqs, one of the paths the level 4 can take is to be snowpark certified. Pretty much any level 4 under 50 (and even lots of the older guys) is capable of skiing the park. That doesn't mean they have much desire to. After all, park is a small subset of skiing. Again, there's a snowpark certification and a separate freestyle association for that.

  • There are ski instructors that specialize in park and others that specialize in off piste/heli-skiing etc. those just require different certifications and many level 4's are park certified as someone already mentioned. ALSO this video doesn't go over the teaching requirements which involves an understanding of physics and is worth half of the certification. If you've ever had a lesson with a level 4 instructor, you'd know that the requirements aren't too low because they're awesome.

  • I'd suggest level 4 should have free skiing included - not freestyle. The really cool people skip the park and go off-piste. They are the ones Red Bull likes because they can do all the park stuff but apply it in a real setting, not one made by machines. Park shots of the umpteenth iron cross suck but the same thing off a 30' cornice - smokin'. Regardless, give me a level 4 from any association and I'll enjoy my day because they are all very good instructors and that is why they exist.

  • @nunapb You're forgetting that even the top freestyle skiiers were at some point taught the skiing basics by a ski instructor!

  • I think you guys are perhaps a bit pissed off since a Canada level 4 can ski the pants off you any day, any conditions. Perhaps stay in the terrain park and bitch about something else.

  • @SeranWR4P To reinforce my point: Lindsey Vonn may have had a sports illustrated photo shoot for being hot, a signature helmet and a signature roof rack for carrying her skis, yet Tanner Hall gets signature skis and sponsorship from red bull etc etc. The money (read: industry) is moving with freestyle skiing. How much money is tied up in the X-games etc? Soon the Olympics will have half-pipe skiing and slopestyle. At Vancouver 2010 the most watched ever was the half-pipe final for snowboarding.

  • @DavidSkis That still reinforces my view that the standard is too low including the level 3. If you compare the number of CSIA level 3s and 4s with that of the NZSIA, CASI, APSI, etc etc, there are way too many level 4 ski instructors in Canada. And whether or not they are capable of skiing the park is irrelevant; a freestyle-skiing component should be included in the standard of the top exams in the country. You guys wonder why every year lesson enrolments go down.

  • @nunapb man he really got you

  • This must be why there are so many CSIA level 4s. It's just more of the same, tighter and faster. There's no acquisition of further skill, just refinement. Let's see some switch and freestyle. Instructors have to move with the industry. The race is cool, but some freestyle needs to be incorporated.
