Den Bergtekne (Folksong),"The Mountain Thrall"

Eg fòr vilt i veduskogin
kringum ein elvesteine,
jutuldottri narrad meg,
eg fann inkji vegin heim.

Eg fòr vilt i veduskogin
kringum ein elve-runne,
jutuldottri narrad meg,
eg hev inkji vegen funnid.

Eg hev vorid med jutulen
og jutulen etter meg rann,
gentunn sa', eg lokkad dei,
um eg dei aldri fann.

Eg hev vorid med jutulen
og jutulen etter meg låg,
gentunn sa', eg lokkad dei,
um eg dei aldri såg.

Fiskin uti fagran vatni,
og sildi søkir hav,
mang ein helsar mågin sin
og veit så litid af.

Fiskin uti fagren vatni,
og ikonn up i tre,
alle så heve dei makamann,
men ingin så heve eg.

Eg fòr vilt i veduskogin
kringum ein elvesteine,
jutuldottri narrad meg,
eg fann inkji vegin heim.

  • Could you tell us who are the authors of the used paintings?

  • @tomaxuser - Adolph Tidemand (1814-1876) & Theodor Kittelsen (1857-1914), both from Norway.

  • Translation to English -part 2:I have spring with the giantess, And the giantess for me was, Gentunn said: "I lure them", As If I saw them. The fish are in the beautiful lake, And herring are searching the sea, Many of good health, And do so little. The fish are in the beautiful lake, And squirrel up a tree, But all raise the spouse, That`s how I raise the alarm. I got wild by the forest, Nearby the river dam, The giant daughter cheated me, I didn`t find my way home.
  • Translation to English-part 1: I got wild by the forest, Around the river trap, The giant daughter cheated me, I didn`t find my way home. I got wild by the forest, Around the river Runes, The giant daughter cheated me, I didn`t find any way. I have spring with the giantess, And the giantess ran after me, Gentunn said: "I lure them", As if I found them.
  • Translation to English will follow soon,

  • I accidentally misspoke when I said "...never having really caught on with the public...". I should have added "outside of Norway" - it's always been popular in Norway - as it should be everywhere. This is a wonderfully moving piece with Grieg's genius in every detail, and this performance is magnificent.

  • egalitarianist my friend, you`re quite right. I love the strong dark words of the poem. This performance is good.

  • @egalitarianist As always, you know so much! It`s _good_ to know more.
