you use the layering option. each layer can be controlled then within it's own environment and won't change anything on the other layers when you're working on it.

You need to create those masks yourself. Watch and listen to the tut again, I do mention it up front!:)

have you tried making tanner people into vampires since most people just use fair-skinned models which makes it easier

It's a fair question...yes I have and no, the effect just doesn't look any good (on very dark skin). You really need to apply a different technique that is used for "clown & mime" style makeup. Keep watching!
