For my exam speech in Oral Communications, our assignment was to give a speech on what we believe, inspired by Doc Martin Luther King Jr.

My speech is entitled, "A Free Country". In case you can't hear me very well, here is the speech to follow along with:

I believe in a free country. I believe that we as Americans should be able to do what we want when we want it. I believe that we should be able to say what we want to say, act how we want to act, look how we want to look. I believe we should be able to believe what we want to believe.
In doing this, I believe in war. I believe that solving our conflicts with other countries can sometimes only happen through fighting.
About four years ago I was 11; in 5th grade. My brother, Sam, graduated from high school. He started at at a local college but quit his schooling after only eight weeks in school. He decided that what was best for him wasnt more schooling, but something physical. He chose the army.
One week from now, my brother, now a Sergeant in the army will leave his base in Washington state and he will fly to Afghanistan to be a true American soldier.
I believe in war not only for my brother, but for the sake of resolving conflicts.
I believe that if you dont agree with war, you shouldnt take it out on the soldiers who risk their lives. You should get mad at the establishment, the government, the big guys in charge. But dont get angry with the pawns of this chessgame of war.
Those soldiers risk their lives day after day to fight for what they believe in; a free country. Soon my brother, whom I am very close to and love with all my heart, will join them. They have the right as free Americans to remain free and to be welcomed back with open arms when returning from war.
You all must enjoy your freedom; if not, you take it for granted. Look down at yourselves; you are wearing clothes you most likely picked out yourself from a closet this morning, if not from the store. Look in the mirror. You are wearing your hair how you prefer. Girls, you can wear as little or as much makeup as you please. Guys, you can sag your pants as low as you want to. You are your own people.
In some countries like Saudi Arabia, the established religion is Muslim and most people practice this. If you are born into a Muslim family that is what you must practice because the values of family there is / you listen to your father. Look around you. How many of us have our own beliefs? How many of us have different beliefs from our parents? How many of us can fight or argue with our parents without being banished from the house, or even from the country? Why?
Were allowed to. That is the answer.
But how did that come to be? How did we get all that freedom?
By fighting.
How did the United States of America even begin to exist?
By fighting. By breaking off from the strict mother-country.
By fighting.
I know that I want to be free. I know that I certainly dont take my freedom for granted, and I hope that all of you do the same. And I know that the war we are fighting right now, this Operation Iraqi Freedom is beneficial to both us and the middle eastern people. They dont have the rights that we have. They are not allowed to talk, to look, to act, and to be how they wish to be. They are trapped in a society that is not free.
Be glad for your freedom. Be grateful for those who are fighting for you, for us.
I believe that when my brother, if my brother, comes back from Afghanistan he should be praised for his work. He should be honored, and not scorned upon as so many soldiers are. He should be free, and he should be loved for making us all free.

  • I belive in love! Good thing Im a socialist! :D

Good luck in your future life. Im in the army, but it doesnt stop me from opposing all wars as a matter of principle. An army is a defense-mechanism and not a conquering-tool. Voilence breeds voilence, love dont hate!

All my best wishes to your brother!

  • Thank you :)

I agree, I'm not saying I'll go start war to conquer! That would be sad. But I like it in defense or as a way to branch out and be your own country. Lalala.

Thank you muchly :) He's in Afghanistan now, and we're always worried. :/

  • You just reassured my hope for your generation. I applaud your views and I also share them. Your brother already has my respect and admiration for putting his life on the line for all of us, and I hope he receives a warm welcome when he gets back here in the States.

  • Thank you so much for your comment. I'm sad to learn that you had lost hope in the first place, although I understand why. I'm glad your hope is restored, and honoured that I could do that. Thank you again.

  • Firstly, nice speech, I don't agree with some of your views, but love that you've thought about it and you're expressing yourself well.

Secondly, beware of projecting your view of the world on others. When you talk about the freedom of Iraqi people, remember that what you know about Iraq is biased by what your government and media have told you. Until you've been there or spoken to real Iraqis directly, you don't actually know what they need or how their culture should be or shouldn't be.

  • praised for making your country free, wait, hes all the way over in afghanistan?? how is he making you free fighting in the middle east. america brought the war to afghan and your complaining about being free, try a country being torn apart by british and american gunfure

  • a true american soldier , whats an untrue one, ones that go friendly firing?

if you believe in a 'free country' , why are american soldiers going round opressing other countries(afghanistan/iraq) with gunfire, policing the world as usual. not much of a free country there is it? fighting isnt the way to solve all conflicts,WTF. but hey its all free will and free country. you want 'free country' take a look at your soldiers settling conflicts yankee style (it will be in another comment)

  • we watched this in our english lesson, your a celibrity in the uk :L

  • Not to mention all the debt that this country is in because of this war. so many lives lost. there are other ways to do things. think big. this video and all these comments make me very sad. wake up, people. it's morning.

  • So very very wrong. you have to fight to have freedom? we aren't fucking monkeys, people. we should be able to resolve conflicts like mature adults; through talking and compromise. many many countries achieve their goals of a country through ways other then death and wars. it's not about the soldiers i'm talking about. i'm talking about all the innocent people that get killed in this war. have you seen the fucking pictures? go look at blown up kids then you tell me that fighting is a good idea.

  • Yes I thought everyone else my age had been brainwashed by the liberals. I'm glad you haven't.
